People’s Climate Marchers March to Enforce “Moral” Principles in Laudato Si, Fulfilling Revelation 13:14

Today’s society is one in which if persons disagree with an administration, a policy, a belief or an action, they mobilize, hold demonstrations, organize marches, protest, and even riot so that their collective voices can affect the desired change. In many cases, these methods have proven effective, this is a phenomenon known as populism. Roughly a week and a half ago, Venezuela held what has been dubbed, “the mother of all marches.” “Venezuela’s opposition is staging the ‘mother of all marches’ on Wednesday, accusing President Nicolas Maduro of resorting to dictatorial measures to quash popular outrage over a deepening economic crisis. In the culmination of a fortnight of violent demonstrations that killed five people, marchers around the country will demand the government present a timeline for delayed elections, halt a security crackdown on protests, and respect the autonomy of the opposition-led legislature.”[1]   It is no different concerning the issue of climate change. Held on Donald Trump’s 100th day in office, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Washington D.C. for the “People’s Climate March,” calling for climate action from President Donald Trump, which of course had the blessing of Pope Francis as they carried his message.
“Carrying banners and signs with quotes from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si, hundreds of Catholics joined the People’s Climate March to call for moral and prayerful action to protect creation…Many in the Catholic contingent said they felt they had a moral obligation to witness in the streets. ‘We march for our grandchildren. Stop global warming,’ read one sign propped up in the back of St. Dominic Church in Washington, where about 300 people gathered before the march for Mass celebrated by Father Hyacinth Marie Cordell, the parish’s parochial vicar. ‘The Vatican is solar, what about US?’ Read another.  ‘We resist, we build, we rise,’ read a sign from St. Francis and Therese Catholic worker Community in Worcester, Massachusetts. Underlying the messages on the signs and banners were people who shared a heartfelt concern to carry out Pope Francis’ call in his 2015 encyclical to live responsibly with the planet, remember the needs of others around the world and to reduce consumption and energy usage for the sake of God’s creation. ‘We feel like ‘Laudato Si calls us to be in the streets, as Pope Francis says, and be active on the social justice issues and climate change,’ Lorence told CNS.  ‘I’ve read enough to really think that this is an emergency,’ Lorence continued. ‘It might not affect us directly right now. But I think we are called to think about the common good.  We’re called to think about the least of these, and the people who are the least of these are being affected by climate change.’”[2]
The message conveyed in Laudato Si that was carried forward at the People’s Climate March, April 29, was that climate change is a real threat, it is a moral issue, requiring a moral solution, for the “common good” of all. The principle of the common good is a Roman Catholic social teaching that urges the necessity of individuals relinquishing personal beliefs and rights for the benefit of society at large. The “moral” solution proposed in the encyclical is the mandatory enforcement of Sunday rest, Sunday worship. [3]
 One principle that we should never forget is that it will be the people, who with a collective voice, will call for, march for, riot for, protest and demonstrate for a Sunday law, and the politicians, so avaricious to gain or retain their power and positions, will yield to the popular demand.
 “And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.  And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.” Revelation 13:14 and 15.
“‘Saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast.’ Here is clearly presented a form of government in which the legislative power rests with the people, a most striking evidence that the United States is the nation denoted in the prophecy.” [4]
“The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet’s words: ‘The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.’ Revelation 12:17.”[3]5
